Oh wait.

I hate manufacturers that do this. The only reason they’re preventing you from getting a paint color is because someone upstairs said “Yes, we must make this only available on the automatic.”

The only manufacturer I’ve stumbled across that doesn’t do this stupid thing are the FCA satellite companies, and even then, they axed the manual on the Renegade, so if you wanted to get a colorful  toaster with a manual, it is out of the picture.

This bugs me.

So does “Oh you want the blackout package?”, “ok, you also need to add the plus package for $5k, the tech package for $2k, and you can no longer select the body color you wanted”

Well kindly go F-yourself then, I’m not spending an extra $7k in shit I don’t want and losing my color just to get the black front end and wheels.

Thankfully when I was shopping my two leading candidates Subaru and Toyota both let you have whatever color you wanted with the manual transmission. Usual issue of available dealership selection still applies (it took 3 months for me to find a Corolla in the blue, with manual, and that a dealer hadn’t stuck the bumper protector on).

Kia Soul Green is THE definitive color of the Kia Soul! How can they NOT offer manual with the official color of the car? Yellow and orange are nice, too, and they should also be offered with manual.

No more panoramic sunroof, either :(

I would like technology to get to the point where it is a trivial thing to order your car in any color you like with no extra charge or restriction. It shouldn’t be available on only super expensive cars.

not on a Renegade. people who would get a manual in a “cheap” car are cheapskates, so they probably do  this because they don’t want to bother with extra-cost paint colors which won’t sell.

I know it’s a “cost” thing, but I really think they need to offer the option to build your own vehicle exactly to your specs.

I would gladly pay more money to get exactly what I want than pay more for a bunch of shit I don’t.

Toyota is one of the few other companies that doesn’t do that.

I was legitimately considering recommending my mother buy a HR-V after her Escape-but-not , but they dropped the manual from the HR-V... and even then they kept the vibrant colors away from the manual. They were all dark colors.

Well yeah, but I’m making the implicit assumption that there is some cost-related reason why it isn’t offered, like the extra prep time, mixing small batches of paint, whatever.  I’m thinking we should have reached the stage by now, though, where thoughtful application of current technology should be able to mitigate those costs and allow the flexibility on a larger scale.

Hmmm... Reading comments below (or above whichever kinja does today) - it seems color is very important to you all.

To me - as long as the doors don’t fall off on first bump and oil doesn’t squirt from every possible hole in the engine, then it’s an OK car.

I can care less what color it is as long as the car is manual.

I currently have a C5 vette in manual. Everything around it is leaking - weather stripping on T top are all sorts of fucked... even after replacing them. Need to replace another window regulator so I can ajust the tilt of the windows

But anyway... yeah. Manual and no leaks.

Color is probably one of the first places to start when looking for a car. Some people are happy with black and white. I personally want to avoid black, white, and gray (with certain exceptions for certain shades of gray which end up being more of a gunmetal color.)

It is silly but the only reason I see why is manuals being low volume and most consumers don’t choose fun colors regardless of transmission . We just got in this Laser Blue 6MT Compass, and it looks great minus the poverty wheels.

This is a weird thing with Kia’s trim level system.

Kia views that as a trim level, not a transmission option. Despite them both being LX trim, it’s viewed internally as LX Manual and LX Automatic. To us, we would ll say yeah that’s an LX and it’s optional to get either trans. To them - different vehicle entirely.

So then it becomes a production allocation situation to them (that was a lot of ‘tions in a row). Typically the manual option is a low production volume for Kia so if you aren’t going to see a lot of production you’re not going to see a lot of color choices.

F or the record, I agree it’s lame. Especially when “colorful” is kind of Soul’s thing.

Probably the best at letting you get what you want is Ford with the F150. You can pretty much custom build a truck from them, at least last time I checked.

I agree, let me have the choice. I think that should be with everything though, not just paint color s. Like I want to be able to buy an Accord with the 2.0, 10 speed automatic, and cloth seats.  I don’t care for leather or a sunroof and have no desire to have one.

I’d just like to point out that in spite of that pop-up, yellow is the only color that you can have on an automatic, but not manual, Soul LX. If you go back to the main color chooser screen there are more colors available with the manual than just those few.

When I’ve looked at used cars I’ll mostly ignore color, but of course have favorites.  But generally condition/price matters more. When buying something new though?  They’ll all be roughly the same price, and all should be in perfect condition.  So heck yes I’m going to be picky on color.  Especially when paying new car prices.  The $30k+ average new car price is way too much to pay and just get beige.

Manufacturers get it wrong. Option packages should be considered modules alongside trim levels. If a trim level includes something standard, then the option package should be selected. Paint should never be considered a dependency for a trim level*. T he base trims of cars need to be vibrant because more people are seeking to get vibrantly colored cars, especially in a “ shrinking” compact market.

* The only time a color should ever be exclusive is if it’s some outlandish or spe cialty color, such as the Soul’s red-roofed model being exclusive to the GT.
